This fun scrape painted bunny craft is the perfect abstract art activity to make during Easter, spring, or while learning about animals. It combines different textures using process art with paint and once finished children can add a fluffy tail to their bunny. Use our free printable bunny template to make this craft even easier and don't worry every child's bunny will turn out unique {even when using the template}.
You can do scrape painting at home, or in the classroom as a group art activity. The finished bunnies will also make a great wall decoration for Easter.
SCRAPE PAINTED BUNNY
Scrape painting is a process art painting technique where paint is scraped across a surface with a flat tool to create colour blending and abstract markings. It can be done with various tools, as long as they have a flat edge, such as a plastic paint scraper, a plastic ruler, squeegee, piece of cardboard or even old bank cards.
It's a fun way for children to explore art techniques like mark making, colour blending and creating different textures just by moving the paint around. We've also made scrape painted Easter eggs previously, which were a lot of fun to create.
Scrape painting is also a great way for children to improve their hand/eye co-ordination and build their fine motor muscles as they grasp the tool and scrape the paint carefully across their paper or canvas. It's also a great activity to cross the midline which is an essential co-ordination skill for children.
You will need:
- White paper
- Bunny template
- Coloured cardstock
- Washable paint {2-4 colours}
- Squeegee or ruler
- Shallow tray
- Cotton ball
- Scissors
- Glue
You can use whatever colours of paint you like to cover the bunny, it'll look best if you use 2-4 different colours as it'll create more variation and patterns when scraped. We chose yellow, red, pink and purple as they're relatively complementary colours and work well together.
I had a variety of coloured cardstock to choose from and chose pink in the end based on which colour complimented the final painting the best. Choose a colour that will allow the bunny to pop and stand out against the background.
If you don't have cotton balls you can use a white, or coloured, pom pom as the bunnies tail.
HOW TO MAKE A SCRAPE PAINTED BUNNY
1. Print off the bunny template into white paper. Place the paper into a shallow tray.
2. Squirt a few drops of paint onto the bunny template. Make sure you squirt a few above the bunny so that once scraped the bunny is fully covered in paint from the top of its ears. The rest of the paint squirts and colours can be distributed across the bunny however you like.
3. Scrape the paint from the top of the page to the bottom of the page in one swipe. This may be a bit tricky for younger children to do by themselves, so an adult may have to hold the paper still while the child uses two hands to pull the squeegee across the paper.
Each drop of paint will leave a different marking as it's scraped down the page. If you're not happy with the coverage you can do multiple swipes, each one will change the paint patterns on the paper. I ended up doing 2 on mine.
4. Set aside to dry. Leave the bunny painting to fully dry on the tray. While the bunny is drying don't forget to wash the paint off your squeegee.
5. Cut out the bunny around the black outline. An adult may need to do this step for toddlers or children with less developed scissor skills.
6. Glue the painted bunny into the centre of a piece of coloured cardstock. We used clear glue, however younger children may find it easier to use a glue stick.
7. Glue a cotton ball onto the bunny as a tail. Place the cotton ball as shown below and press down on it firmly for a few seconds to make sure it's glued into place securely.
