C is for Cotton Balls: Sensory Alphabet

As parents or teachers, we're constantly exploring new ways to make learning more engaging, enjoyable, and effective for our children. A fun way to do this when teaching the letters of the alphabet is by creating a sensory alphabet {also known as tactile letters}. Creating a sensory alphabet stimulates multiple senses at once including sight, touch and sometimes sound, which is a great way for children to form a deeper understanding of the individual letters.

A sensory alphabet is an exceptional tool that merges the tangible experience of touch with the abstract world of letters, making the learning process not only more fun but also more immersive for children. Follow our step by step instructions below to create your own sensory letter C, I've also included a free printable letter C template.

Letter A Crafts & Activities for Preschoolers

The letters of the alphabet are one of the first concepts taught in school because they're the foundation for reading and writing, communication skills and language development. It's important that students have a strong grasp of the letters of the alphabet including letter formation and phonics so they can then recognise the letters, understand the sounds they make and use them to form written words and to learn to read.

Most teachers will introduce letters through letters of the week, in alphabetical order, starting with A. I've put together a list of letter A crafts for preschoolers and school children that are for items that start with the letter A and are shaped like the letter A, so they reinforce both the physical formation and the sound of the letter. I've also got a list of letter A ideas that include visual, tactile, auditory and movement based activities. These are great activities to do in kindergarten, at home, in class at school, or during homeschooling with children aged 3-6yrs old.

How to Prepare Preschoolers for Primary School: 7 Tips for Starting School

Starting school can be an extremely emotional time for children {and parents}. It's often the biggest change in routine kids have experienced in their lives and for many it will be the longest time they've spent away from their parents. Understandably children are likely to be anxious about the new environment, new rules and new people they'll meet at school.

Many parents worry about academically preparing their kids for school and can often overlook other skills they'll need to know. While knowing colours, shapes, the alphabet and numbers to 10 before school is recommended, there are many other important social, emotional and physical skills children will need to help make the transition as smooth as possible.
