Free Printable Farm Animal Flashcards

Farm animals are often some of the first animals children learn about because not only are they cute, they're also really good for learning different animal sounds e.g. cow goes mooooo, horse goes neigh. If your child already loves farm animals, or you're wanting to introduce them soon, these free printable farm flashcards are a great way to introduce them.

These flashcards are a fun way for children to learn about familiar farm animals like cows, pigs, horses, chickens, and goats, without having to visit a real farm every time they want to see them. Use them during play to help them learn farm animal names and sounds.

FARM FLASHCARD PLAY IDEAS

When used through play, games, and everyday activities, flashcards can support learning in hands-on ways so children won't even realise how much they're learning. Flashcards can be an engaging way to help children expand their vocabulary, improve their visual perception and communication skills as well as helping build their concentration and fine motor skills.

Help children work on these skills with the farm flashcards by using them to:

1. Learn the names of farm animals and items.

Using the cards repetitively throughout different activities will help children learn the names of the different farm animals, and expand their vocabulary. It will also help children work on their visual perception skills as they learn to recognise and identify the different animals from the images.

2. Use them as room décor.

Use the cards as a wall display or hanging banner in a bedroom, playroom, homeschooling area or classroom. They would also be a great backdrop for a farm unit setup.

3. Match with picture book images.

Use the flashcards to identify farm animals in books by matching the images with illustrations. This is a great activity to do with children who can't read yet as they naturally use pictures to determine what a book is about and this will reinforce that the picture = that specific animal.

4. Match with animal figurines.

If you have any farm animal figurines, either wooden or realistic plastic ones, you can set out a group of figurines that match with the flashcards in a pile and children can sort all of the animals and cards into matching pairs.

5. Use them while singing Old McDonald has a farm.

Hold up the different animal cards as references to guide Old McDonald has a farm. Have children call out the name of the animal by showing them the flashcard.

6. Use in conjunction with small worlds or sensory trays.

If you set up a farm small world or sensory tray for play, add the flashcards as a backdrop or to the side so children can use them to identify the animals as they play.

7. Games of snap or memory.

You can turn the flashcards into a game of snap or memory by printing out 2 copies of each page.

To play snap shuffle all the flashcards into a face down pile. Each player takes a turn flipping over the top card onto a face up pile. When 2 of the same cards are placed on top of the pile the first person to hit the cards and say snap wins.

To play memory shuffle the flashcards and place them all face down in a grid pattern. Each player takes turns flipping 2 cards over at a time. If they match the player keeps those cards, if not they get flipped back over. The person with the most matching cards at the end wins.
