This cute shape bunny paper craft is the perfect simple craft activity for Easter, spring, or an animal homeschooling unit. Simply print out the free bunny template I designed and follow the instructions below to create your own special shape bunny.
SHAPE BUNNY CRAFT
Using the free shape bunny template kids can create a beautiful artwork and learn about shapes at the same time. The template includes bunny bodies in 7 different shapes, including a circle, an oval, a love heart, a triangle, a rectangle, a square and a hexagon. Practice the shape names, count the different number of sides and compare the sizes of the shapes as children prepare the templates.
This is also a great classroom activity for K-2 as it offers plenty of fine motor practice while colouring, cutting and sticking down the template pieces. Kids can get creative and colour in all the template pieces before constructing their shape bunny to create unique artworks.
- Scissors
- Glue stick
- Black pen
- White paper
- Bunny template
- Coloured markers or crayons
- Coloured paper or cardstock
We left our bunny template completely white apart from colouring the inside of the ears and the nose pink, however children can colour the entire template if they wish. If your doing this craft with younger children I suggest using crayons and a glue stick as they'll be easier for them to grasp. Older children can use markers and squeeze glue if desired.
If you want to create a more mixed media version of the shape bunny you can substitute the eyes in the template for googly eyes or eye stickers. You can exchange the tail circle with a pom pom or cotton ball. You can also glue on pipe cleaners as whiskers instead of drawing them.
If the children don't want to colour their template pieces they can experiment using different coloured paper or even newspaper for the bunny itself {use the template to trace the shapes onto the newspaper then cut them out}. As well as offering a variety of different coloured paper or cardstock for the background.
DIRECTIONS TO MAKE A SHAPE BUNNY
1. Print out the free shape bunny template. If you're assembling more than one shape bunny you'll need to print out multiple copies of the first page of the template {1 copy for each bunny}.
2. Colour the template pieces. Children can colour the entire template or just the nose and inner ears. It's easier for children to colour the template pieces before they're cut out.
3. Cut out all pieces of the template. An adult may need to assist with this step if children do not have developed scissor skills.
4. Position the template pieces on the coloured paper or cardstock. This is to visualise where you want to glue them later. The following steps will show how to glue the bunny together in the correct order.
5. Glue on the tail to the side of where you will glue the body shape. We chose to glue ours to the right, but you can put it on either side.
6. Glue the selected body shape onto the centre of the paper or cardstock background, slightly overlapping the tail piece.
7. Glue the head onto the body.
8. Glue the ears onto the head. Make sure the inner ear sections are at the bottom of the ears when glued.
9. Glue the eyes and nose onto the face of the bunny.
10. Glue the feet onto the bottom of the body.
11. Glue the paws onto the sides of the body.
12. Use a black pen to add final details. Draw three lines on each foot and paw. Then draw a mouth and whiskers coming off the nose.
The finished bunny would make great wall art to decorate your child's bedroom, or a great display piece for an art wall. We have a dedicated wall in our lounge room that is our seasonal art gallery so our shape bunny will be on display there along with any other Easter craft masterpieces the kids make.
