When you have nothing to say


I'm sitting here with some rare free time as bub's actually having an afternoon sleep today hurrah {thank-you mothers group}... but the problem is I have nothing to say. Its murphy's law really. All the times I have heaps to say I have no time to write it down and now I have the time I have nothing to say... Oh the irony.

The truth is I've been having a bit of a crisis of confidence lately. I took time off writing over the Christmas period and it seems my blogging mojo went on holidays too and refuses to come back to reality with me. The problem with having time off is I had ample time to over-think everything about blogging. Does anybody really care about anything I write? Are my blog posts useful? Is there any point to it all? Does anybody even read any of it?

I seem to have gotten myself into a funk of sorts and I can't really get out of it. I've been writing a little bit, but I still have that little voice in the back of my head questioning whether I should bother. You know when there's a mozzie buzzing around your ear and its annoying the hell out of you, but you can't catch it? The voice is like that. I can't seem to shake it, but its annoying enough that I can't ignore it either.

I'm getting really bogged down thinking my posts have to be really informative and useful for others. All the blogging info tells us to niche down and become experts in our field to be successful. Yet here I am little old me blogging about whatever floats my boat. I guess you could say I'm kind of in the parenting niche, but I'm most certainly not an expert. I have absolutely no clue what I'm doing most days and half the time my inner monologue is second guessing and criticising everything I do do, so why would anybody care about what I have to say? See what I mean that bloody mozzie just won't leave me alone.

I can't tell you how frustrating it is not being able to write. Not frustrating enough for me to get up and clean instead, but frustrating none the less. I have a tonne of things to say, but my words {read brain} are failing me right now. Which is kind of a problem when you're a blogger and writing is what you do.

  1. Hello lovely. Ignore the blogging advice. Let it flow how feels right for you rather than stress about a niche or being successful. Writing about what feels easy AND good to you will always work best. And a side note as someone who often has the same problem of having things to say when I cannot sit and write- I jof down ideas for blog posts and circle back to flesh them out another time. I also have the italk app on my phone and will quickly speak my idea as in 2 babble minutes I can capture the essence. Xxx

  2. I understand the pressure to find a niche and "be an expert". But I think being true to yourself and finding your voice is just as important. I love reading your personal stories the most - the ones where you are raw, honest and true. I agree with the suggestions Deb posted above, to jot down or speak your ideas as you have them. It certainly helps to have a bank of ideas for those times that you aren't feeling the blogging mojo. Have a think about the posts/issues/ideas that you would like to write about - that may also give you an idea of your future direction. Good luck with it - I'm here if you ever want to bounce ideas with someone x

  3. Toni, I completely get this and go through this crisis of confidence myself quite often. I believe it's harder for personal bloggers as we don't always have something to 'sell' and it can feel that we aren't adding value to people's lives in the way that we're told we should. I like Kirsty's advice above about being true to yourself. Write about what feels right to you. You started this blog as a memoir for Hayley. Keep going with that. Some of my favourite blogs are personal ones where people are sharing a little snippet of their lives. I like blogs I can relate to and those that tell a story. If you're not feeling it, take another week or two off. You've got a lot of external pressure on you at the moment, it's no wonder your mind is cloudy. Play by your own rules, do what feels right for you and let me know how you go :)

  4. Every blogger I know goes through this same thing. I know that doesn't make you feel any better but it is true. We wake up and think ' why does anyone read this crap I write?' But people do and keep coming back. You're doing something right.

    I hate the rules and tend to ignore them these days. There is a lot of information on the web that people can access, but there is only one of you, so don't get bogged down on adding to all the clutter, when you can simply be who you are and even more valuable as a result. xx

  6. I completely understand the feelings and fears you are going through. It was one of the things that stopped my from writing last year. I got myself into a massive funk. I love that you post about the different parts of your life and have really enjoyed watching your little one grow. I think screw the 'must do' of blogging and do what you enjoy, write what you feel and don't over think it. That last one is easier said than done though I know!

I think we all go through this at one point or another, and I think it's a sign to take a break and do something new or take a risk and try something different - I don't mean to leave the blog altogether, but do something you haven't done before - like go on a mini break, or visit a new restaurant or something and see what that change brings in the way of writing creativity. Your voice is always needed Toni. Your words matter. x
