Mummy Must Have Review | Summer lane

One of the truly wonderful parts of having a toddler is watching their play grow and evolve. While babies play they're mainly doing things like moving objects between their hands, shaking a rattle or picking toys up and down. As they get older it evolves into pretend play and that's when things really get fun.

Bub is now using heaps of her toys to imitate things that we do during the day. Its super cute watching her put her dolly to bed or making her little people go for walks. She's constantly coming up with new imaginative ways to use her toys. Given her newfound love of all things pretend, we've got a few new toys to help spark her imagination. I'm still busting at the seams to giver her the play kitchen we have for her birthday, but these are doing a good job at tiding her over until then.

ALIMROSE DESIGNS AUDREY DOLL

Bub's really getting into dolls and stuffed toys at the moment. A few months ago a doll was just something she could look at for a second then throw onto the floor when she got bored. Nowadays she uses her dolls to imitate everything that we do. She feeds them, gives them cups of tea and tries to give them her bottle. She gives them big cuddles and also puts them to sleep with their own little blankie {a serviette from her tea set}. Needless to say we've been adding to her dolls lately.

We've just added the Audrey doll by Alimrose designs. I've been eyeing off Alimrose dolls since bub was quite young, but I didn't want to get one until she was old enough to appreciate it a bit more. I like that its a completely soft doll with sewn on shoes and hair {so nothing can be ripped off and lost}. I also love that the dress is part of the body but the bottom still opens out like a real dress.

I chose the Audrey doll because she has blonde hair like bub {and considering I don't have blonde hair I thought it'd be nice for bub to have a doll that looks like her}. Plus how cute are her little eyes and pigtails?! Audrey is available in a few different styles, but I chose the pink bunny dress because bub loves all things pink.

There's something so magical about hand sewn dolls compared to plastic ones {as much as we love the plastic ones too}. Hand sewn ones just feel that little bit more personal and special. Bub loves pointing at her shoes and saying shooooss!!!. We also point out where her eyes, nose, mouth and hair is. And of course give her big cuddles.

At 25cm tall the Alimrose dolls are the perfect size for a toddler to carry around. If she's good and keeps treating Audrey nicely {and doesn't draw on her face when I'm not looking} then we might get Audrey a sister for Christmas.

SCHLEICH ANIMALS

Schleich animals review from Summer Lane children's boutique

Bub's also obsessed with animals at the moment. Well not just at the moment, its been quite a while now. A few weeks back we discovered Schleich animals at one of her speech therapy classes. She loved them and played with them for ages. It was one of the first times she displayed imaginary play. She was walking them along the table and making the sounds. Making the elephants stomp and the giraffes eat pretend food. I knew I wanted to get some for home, but I'd only seen cheap plastic animals at the shops which were all too small for her {i.e. she'd still put them in her mouth and try to eat them and possibly succeed}. I didn't know the animals were from Schleich at the time either {I never thought to ask the brand name} so it took me a while to track them down. After a few weeks of searching I finally found the Schleich animals online.

I may have gone a bit crazy and got a heap of animals, but to be honest I was quite restrained compared to all the ones I really wanted to get for her. Have you seen the Schleich collection? There are so many different animals. There's farm animals, wild animals and even dinosaurs. We got the african elephant, pig, akhal-teke mare, penguin, sheep, male labrador and giraffe calf {although the labrador and sheep were MIA when I was taking photos, obviously too busy playing with her other toys}.

The Schleich animals are my favourite brand of toy animals. They're nice and solid with a bit of weight to them so they stand up properly themselves and the legs and arms aren't easy to break because the plastic isn't cheap and flimsy. They're a bit on the dearer side for plastic animals {ranging from $4.99 to $14.99 a piece}, but they're definitely worth it for the quality. The attention to detail is also amazing with the animals featuring minute details such as feathers and muscle tone which you just don't get on other brands. They're a great realistic representation of the animals and I know they'll last for years.

Right now we're using them to learn different animal names and sounds. Well I'm injecting the educational parts into our play where I can anyway. A lot of the time she's too busy feeding them sultanas or playdough. Walking them up and down all our furniture. Making them race against the little people or giving them special cups of tea. She is a toddler afterall.

We got the Alimrose Audrey doll and the Schleich animals online from Summer Lane. 5. I love that Alimrose doll, we gave Miss 18 a cloth doll when she was a bub and she adored it - still has it today! I've just had a quick look at the Summer Lane website to see if there was a boy version for my nephew, sadly there isn't, which is a bit of a shame. I saw they had some cool monkeys and things but maybe a boy doll might be good, particularly for little boys that are about to become big brothers?! BTW you are so right about the animal figurines, they are way too small for the age when kids are most interested in them.

    1. Janet there is a boy doll named Ted, there's two different versions of him. This is a link to one of them - http://summerlane.com.au/index.php?id_product=5535&controller=product. If you search Alimrose Ted in the search bar of the site you should see all the options.

  8. These are gorgeous! I love Alimose dolls and toys - they are too cute and a favourite in our household. I haven't tried the animal ....I think until this point I thought they might be too small and Little Miss Raj might swallow them . So great tip - must buy animals for Xmas !

    1. The Schleich ones are pretty big compared to other brands which is why I like them because bub still has a habit of putting things in her mouth too. I'm not worried about her swallowing these though {even though she's chewed on the horse leg a few times}.

  9. I have a 2 year old daughter at home and it is sooooo wonderful watching her play. She has a "treasure box" which has old necklaces, cufflinks, odd earrings etc. She makes people and christmas trees out of them at the moment. It's pretty freaking awesome. She does have one doll/baby which she likes to look after. Those animals look like a great toy :)
