Mummy Must Have Review | Baby Bee Hummingbirds First Curl Locket

I have an obsession with making memories and preserving memories in any way possible. When dad died when I was 10 I was taught a pretty huge life lesson that things, and people, don't last forever. It was a tough lesson to learn at such a young age and I've been obsessed with making memories ever since. Its one of the reasons why I write this blog.

Since bub came along my obsession has gone into overdrive. I want to hold onto every moment as long as possible, like most parents probably do. I take waaaaay too many photos and I probably over share too much on here, but its all part of a bigger picture to create a huge memory bank of her childhood, for both her and me. I want her to have lots of things to look back at so she can get a glimpse of the moments that will inevitably fade over time. I also want to have ways of remembering her as a "baby" because I know she won't be little forever.

Bub still hasn't had her first hair cut at 2yrs old because daddy won't let me get it cut. Consequently her hair is halfway down her back and her fringe is below her chin, but it still looks really cute so I can see why he wants to leave it the way it is. He made an exception however and allowed me to cut off a curl to get a personalised first curl locket made by Baby Bee Hummingbirds. I know the norm is to store first curls in a little keepsake box in a drawer somewhere, but I wanted to do something extra special. Plus a personalised locket means I can keep it with me and close to my heart each day.

Baby Bee Hummingbirds offer a variety of first curl gems including beads and lockets. There's a few standard options listed on the website, however you can customise your gem as much as you like. I created a custom locket combining bits and pieces of designs I'd seen created previously for other clients. I combined a clear glass silver locket with an initial gem and had her curl set around the outside of the initial gem. The ordering process was really easy {even with all my customisation} and sending off the curl was simple. A few weeks later I received my gorgeous piece in the mail {it actually came back to me a lot quicker than I expected and arrived in time for mothers day}.

To say I'm in love with it is an understatement. I completely adore it! Its simple yet elegant and it'll go with every outfit I wear so I don't need to wait for special occasions to dress up and wear it. I bought a simple silver snake chain from a local jewellery shop to wear it on.

{yep I'm clearly camera shy}

Its exactly what I wanted and even though I personalised it a lot Amy could understand my vision for the piece and captured it perfectly. She's actually added it as a locket option on the website now as its received such positive feedback on the Baby Bee Hummingbirds facebook page. It can be customised with different initial gems or charm gems. The gems can also be crafted from breastmilk {mine is resin as I'm no longer breast feeding}.

I've worked with Baby Bee Hummingbirds before when they designed a custom breastmilk gem for my friend. Baby Bee Hummingbirds is run by Amy who is a midwife and mother of three. Amy uses her individual preservation techniques to create unique and exclusive gems. In addition to first curl gems, she can also create beads from breastmilk, encapsulated placenta, umbilical stump and ashes. She can create a variety of different styles of pendants, gems, rings and earrings. You can see all of her design options at www.babybeehummingbirds.com.au and if you'd like to have your own personal gem made you can save 15% by using the code FMSY15 when ordering. She also ships worldwide. I can't recommend Amy's work enough and I'll definitely be getting more pieces in the future.

Do you have your babies first curl stored somewhere?

  1. Oh these are darling! I must look into the boobie milk jewellery thing (we're still breastfeeding!). I can't cut my baby's hair and really probably don't need to for a very long time. All my bubbas have short, fine hair for years until they fluff-up!

    1. Mine was born with a head full of hair and its just kept growing ever since haha. I wish I had've known about her jewellery before I stopped breastfeeding because I would've definitely got a breastmilk gem made.

  2. I don't think I do!!! Although I will have to dig out their scrapbooks and double check. I do however have my own first curl, in an envelope in my baby scrapbook.

  3. Aww these are gorgeous. My mum still has a lock of my hair in a photo album. I've been a bad mum and don't have a lock of my girls hair. I wish I did, especially with the little one. She had black hair when she was born and now it's blonde. #teamIBOT

    1. That's why I decided on making the locket because no doubt I'd lose her hair if I kept a bit of it somewhere.

  6. How utterly gorgeous. Little Miss Raj hasn't had her hair cut either yet so this is a great idea to make the occasion quite momentous!
