Mater mothers maternity and baby care (including giveaway)

Bub has quite a few allergies, mainly food based, but her skin does get affected too. She reacts easily to certain fragrances and petrochemicals. Because of this she reacts to a lot of the popular children's skincare brands. However she is also prone to dry skin thanks to her cows milk protein allergy so she needs to use skincare products to help her maintain moisture. Since day one the process of finding the right skin care products for her has been a case of trial and error. We ended up only finding two brands that she hasn't reacted to so far. Then I heard that the Mater Mothers had created a new range of skincare products suitable for sensitive skin and I didn't think twice about trying them. The more options we have for bub, the better.

The Mater Mothers Hospital is in Brisbane and is renowned as one of the best hospitals in Australia for neonatal critical care (premature and seriously ill babies). Premature babies is a cause that hits close to home for me as my first niece was born six weeks early and I got to see all the wonderful care and support the NICU nurses provide each time I visited her. My two other nieces were actually born at the Mater Hospital and one underwent life saving heart surgery there at nine months of age. The facilities at the Mater are very familiar to our family and we're extremely grateful that they exist. Unfortunately all of the wonderful care and medical procedures provided by the Mater cost money so they are always endeavouring the raise money and donations to further fund research projects and pay for important equipment. In an effort to help raise funds and to extend their care to babies at home they have developed a range of maternity and baby products.

The Mater Mothers product range includes a body balm for pregnancy, baby wash, baby moisturiser and nappies from newborn to toddler. The products are co-created by Mater midwives and mums to ensure they are a quality product. All proceeds from the sale of products support the Mater Little Miracles. Bub is too big for the nappies already, thanks to her chunky thighs so we trialled the baby wash, baby moisturiser and the body balm.

Baby Wash

The Mater baby wash is specifically designed for delicate newborn skin which means it can also be used on babies and children with sensitive skin. It has a gentle tear-free formula so can safely be used on babies hair and scalp as well as body which is great for us as we wash her hair every bath. Before using it I checked the ingredients against the ones in the current body wash we use for her. As much as I'm used to her having allergic reactions the trepidation when trying a new product never goes away. The ingredients were quite similar so that put my mind at ease that she should be ok.

I was very impressed with the body wash. It lathered well and washed her body and hair as good as any other body wash we've used. It had a slight fragrance, but that didn't seem to bother her. Most importantly she didn't have a reaction to it, either immediately or later on. It also didn't irritate her eyes.

Baby Moisturiser

I was less concerned using the moisturiser after she had no reaction to the bath wash. Again she didn't mind the slight fragrance and her skin wasn't irritated. I watched her like a hawk for ages after looking for the slightest sign of red skin. Turns out I needn't have worried because she was fine. The moisturiser also absorbed into her skin nice and easily and was a good consistency for her after bath massage with daddy.

Pregnancy Balm

Obviously I'm not pregnant so I can't test the product for its intended use, but it does say its suitable after birth while your body is returning to pre-pregnancy weight and given that a year post baby I'm still not there I guess that qualifies me. I tested the body balm on my stretch marks (where else) as they're the driest part of my body and my poor tummy is in desperate need of all the help it can get to restore the damage done. I was very happy with the consistency and it absorbed quickly into my skin. It was touch dry very quickly and my skin felt moisturised, but not greezy. It also didn't leave any oily marks on my clothes like other moisturisers do, which I was really happy with. I'd definitely recommend it to pregnant friends and even to others as a general moisturiser.

----------

Overall I was really impressed with the quality of the Mater baby care products. They all do what they're supposed to and without any unwanted side affects or nasty reactions. Given how sensitive and dry our skin is in this family that's pretty good. The full size products are also quite affordably priced and I love the fact that the proceeds go towards the Little Miracles Foundation.

If you'd like to purchase any of the Mater products, including the nappies, you can buy them online, at Good Price Pharmacy Warehouse, Terry White Chemists, Healthpoint Chemist Group or at the Mater Pharmacy. If you'd like to make a donation to Mater Little Miracles you can do so here.

  6. I might have to check these out. My hands have been incredibly dry lately and the moisturisers I've tried don't seem to be cutting it.

  7. Even though we've moved on from the baby stage we are still in need of the gentlest ingredients for our youngest. Suffering from eczema, she is in constant discomfort from most skin products. We've even been advised to avoid the products specifically designed for dermatitis problems. So I would love to try this range on her skin, a lovely change from bland water and sorbolene creams.

  8. I love my babies smelling nice and knowing that their skin is getting looked after with excellent products. This prize would be especially handy right now as my new baby's skin is accustoming to the outside environment, as it dries out really easily.

  9. We love the Mater Mothers range here too, it's been great for the girls' sensitive skin - Rosie can just squeeze her skinny butt into their nappies too and I'd also highly rate them.

  14. Even though I have wee ones of my own, I'm entering this giveaway in the hope that I will be able to give the prize to a friend! Currently going through the stressful and tense process of artificial insemination, I have complete confidence that we are going to get the magic news this month and she will love and appreciate these beautiful products as being her first sign of her little miracle being on the way. Thanks for considering xx

  15. It would be lovely to have some lovely quality products to use on my children. With my husband currently unemployed due to him being made redundant, little luxuries like this are just that, luxuries. It would make a really nice change to have something other than generic products to use on their delicate skin.

  23. I too understand the problem of sensitive skin. I have it and have also have eczema. But my eldest daughter suffers from it far worse than I do (I think all her allergies may have something to do with that). For years I trialled different products and saw specialists but only 2 products seemed to make any difference and even that was minimal. Thankfully the eczema has died down but the dry skin is a continuous problem and I've long since given up on any miracle cream. But I have to say that I am intrigued by a product that was developed by such a reputable hospital who isn't focused on a profit and in fact donates money to a worthy cause. It actually sounds like a truly gentle brand that won't cause any harm to my daughter and my skin - and if it helps then that is a bonus. I will have to look out for the range. Thanks for this blog post.
